In addition, your shredded paper makes great bedding for little puppies and kittens.
5 Give office supplies for use by the staff at the Humane Society. It takes a great deal of copy paper, pens, files, office equipment, computers, desks, phones, copiers and fax machines to keep an average Humane Society in operation to take care of all the incoming pets, meet their needs and try to find good homes for them.
6 Donate money to the Humane Society to let them buy the exact pet supplies that meet their needs. The money also goes to pay for vet expenses. Many animals are sick or need surgeries and the cost to restore their health can be expensive. Some of the animals have medical conditions so they need medications or drugs to keep them healthy and money donated for these types of pet supplies are more than welcome.
7 Wash and clean the pet supplies, toys, leashes and bedding that you have at home after the loss of a beloved pet. It's a waste to just throw these pet supplies away when there are so many animals that are in need of them. A cage with bedding in it doubles as a pet bed and an area for pets to go when owners leave the home. Smaller animals, like rodents and lizards, will require a cage or aquarium with a den or hideaway for darkness and comfort. For rodents, cages are often lined with sheets or filled with paper shavings. Lizards often require sand to line their terrariums.

Shedding brushes are helpful for removing tangles and extra fur from long-haired pets, while soft-bristled brushes are fine for short-haired pets. Smaller animals will only require occasional baths using shampoo or soap purchased from a pet shop.

Toys

Animals can become bored and develop destructive behavior unless they have toys. Some toys will provide an opportunity for pets and owners to bond and others will keep pets occupied when their owners don't want to play. Dogs may enjoy a hollow ball filled with treats or Frisbees, while cats prefer toys like fake mice and laser pointers. Rodents typically enjoy chew toys made of wood or seeds. Reptiles prefer hiding and relaxing instead of play, and will be happy with the use of a rock to bask on underneath a heating lamp.

Treats are important for rewarding puppies when they follow commands. While human food works for rewarding puppies, it is better to purchase treats like dog biscuits or liver snacks. Training cats not to misbehave may require the use of a spray bottle filled with water. The pet supply industry is a multibillion-dollar enterprise. There are a number of niches you can explore if you choose to sell pet supplies as a business. Choose to create your own line of pet supplies and sell them, or choose to resell items that are already available. Pros and cons come with both approaches. If you choose to sell pet supplies as a business, then there are a few things you need to do in order to get started.

1 Determine your selling platform. Do you want to sell online, retail or both? Selling online will reduce the amount of overhead you have; however, you will need to develop a website and set up a merchant account in order to receive payments. Website development can be somewhat complex, and although there are many do-it-yourself solutions out there, the success or failure of your online business can be directly attributed to the look, feel and functionality of your website.
2 Determine if you want to sell your own line or resell someone else's. Selling someone else's pet supplies is probably the easiest way to become established in the marketplace. While you do not have to obtain permission to resell any particular line, it adds credibility to your business if you can claim that you are an authorized reseller. To obtain permission to resell (as well as receive wholesaler rates) contact the manufacturer of the item(s) you wish to resell. Getting that permission is a bit harder. 3 Apply for a business license and insurance. If you decide to sell retail, then visit your municipality's business office to apply for a business license. Apply for a sales and use tax certificate. It will be your responsibility to collect and report sales taxes each month. The good news is that you will be able to purchase your inventory without having to pay sales tax on it, thus reducing your overhead costs. While you aren't currently required to collect and report sales taxes on online sales in most jurisdictions, you still need to obtain a business license.
4 Get customers. The most important aspect of any successful business is getting customers to buy things. Market your business in order to be successful. If you are an online business, then join and actively participate in related forums. Discreetly draw attention to your website, or use social media outlets to promote your business.

Not to worry, there is a variety of simple and natural, yet effective formulas that are easy to prepare yourself -- and equally easy on the pocketbook. In fact, the ingredients may already be as close as your own cupboard or medicine cabinet.

The Nature Maid, an eco-friendly house-cleaning service in Los Angeles that caters to many pet owners -- has shared a few of their secrets with me -- to pass along to you.

1 Clean your kitchen and bathroom floors with simple white vinegar (either straight or diluted with water), which acts as a disinfectant in lieu of toxic ammonia or bleach. Vinegar will get your floors just as clean and be much safer for the pet who licks up anything that may have dropped out of his bowl or fell from the counter (pretty much all pets).
2 Sprinkle baking soda on your carpeting with a flour sifter or shaker and let it sit for about 15 minutes before vacuuming, in order to freshen the carpet and loosen the dirt. For an even fresher scent you can apply an essential oil fragrance with a dropper and mix it in with the baking soda; just make sure it's completely mixed in before applying to the carpet.
3 Take a plastic spray bottle and spray the inside of your toilet bowl with white vinegar (about 1 cup), including the walls and under the rim and seat. Then coat with baking soda (about 1/4 cup) and sprinkle in some water. Let it stand for a couple of minutes and then brush well with a toilet brush. The vinegar serves as a non-toxic disinfectant, so when your pet stops in for a drink, the worst that will happen is she'll walk away with an unpleasant taste.
Wipe down the outside of the bowl and seat with microfiber cloths and water, then follow with isopropyl alcohol to disinfect and shine.
For stubborn bowl stains, crumble some pumice and scrub it on the walls and under the rim with your brush.
4 Spray windows and mirrors with isopropyl alcohol. You can also wash windows with straight white vinegar or vinegar diluted with water.
5 Clean your bathroom, kitchen, furniture and wood/linoleum floors with liquid castile soap diluted with water in a spray bottle, and you can add essential oils if you like. Castile is not a name brand, but rather a type of soap derived from vegetable oil instead of synthetic or animal substances -- and a favorite staple for "green" cleaning in general. In fact, castile soap is so safe for pets, it can be used as a pet shampoo.

Becoming a distributor of green pet supplies is fairly simple if you already own a pet business. Pet stores, veterinarian offices, shelters and pet grooming businesses can increase revenue by offering a line of green pet supplies for customers to purchase. This is similar to hair salons that offer products for sale in addition to hair styling, cutting and coloring services. Hair salons buy products at wholesale prices and sell them for more than they paid. This is how they make money. The same is true if you decide to become a green pet supply distributor.

7 Add a page to your website that features different products from the website you decide to work with. You may also decide to sign up for more than one affiliate program and provide links to each one so your website visitors and customers can comparison shop.
8 Tell your customers about your new product offerings. Put flyers out in your store or clinic. You also could send email announcements or mail postcards to your current customers to let them know they can purchase green pet products from you.

7 Invite members of the local business community and the general public to celebrate the opening of your store. Send out invitations and run ads 1 month before your event. Chamber of Commerce officials are often helpful planning grand opening celebrations for new businesses.
8 Consider buying a franchise. It's no secret large chains and franchise pet supply stores have stronger buying power than small, local businesses. This almost always equates to lower retailer prices, which sometimes negatively affects the local businesses from competing. Franchises, however, play an important role in many areas in which they operate. If you have trouble competing against the larger supply stores, consider a franchise with a proven marketing system and solid wholesale pricing structures that allow you to pass savings to customers and still specialize (see Resources).

You can start your online pet supply store from a spare bedroom or basement. Start out by researching other pet supply stores online. Take notes on which pet supply products are sold most often online. Products that often appear on websites are probably the top sellers. Decide what types of products you want to sell, including pet food, treats, multiple dog leashes, bowls and collars. Set your prices to be commensurate with other Internet pet supply stores.

Include descriptions, dimensions and prices under the pictures. Search for an address or domain name for your website. Use your business name such as Elitepetproducts.com, for example. Go to websites such as Godaddy.com, Domaintools.com or eNow.com to see if your domain name is available, according to Entrepreneur.com. Register your website address. Find a company such as Yahoo.com or Godaddy.com to host your website.
7 Hire a search engine optimizer to attain a high ranking in major search engines like Google.com and Lycos.com. Help your search engine optimizer by creating keywords that best describe your pet supply products and offerings.
8 Place classified ads in major pet magazines such as "Dog Fancy," "Dog World," "Cats Magazine," "Cat Fancy" and "Tropical Fish Hobbyist."
9 Order products from your wholesalers as customers order them from you. Pay only the wholesale cost of the products and keep the rest. Ship your pet supply products out to customers when you receive them, unless you use drop shipping services.

After use, pet supplies like pet dishes, litter boxes, crates, carriers and beds can become breeding grounds for pet dander, odor and bacteria. To keep your home smelling fresh and your pets healthy, clean these items regularly. Using a few nontoxic items you may already have in your home, you can remove dirt, debris, pet hair and odors from these items. Clean these items to please your pets and yourself in environmentally friendly ways, avoiding harmful chemical residue and fumes.

1 Remove covers from pet beds and launder them in cold water with 1/2 cup vinegar to remove odors and disinfect them. Fill a bathtub with a few inches of warm water and 1 to 2 tsp. of dish soap. Submerge the foam from inside the pet bed, washing away any debris, stains or hair. Rinse the foam well and dry in the sun, along with the cover when clean. Sun drying removes odors and prevents shrinkage of the pet bed cover. Replace the cover on the foam and leave out the newly cleaned bed for your pet. Wash bedding every two to three weeks.
2 Wash pet dishes in hot water and dish soap. Use a washcloth to clean stainless steel dishes as scouring pads can leave ugly scratches on the metal. To remove dried-on pet food, add a sprinkle of baking soda to the soapy dishes to scrub away food particles gently. Rinse in hot water to remove any soap residue and wipe dry.
3 Scrub down litter boxes every two to three weeks after emptying and disposing of the litter. Spray down the inside with a vinegar and water solution to kill any bacteria and neutralize urine odors. Use a scrub brush to remove any caked on litter and rinse. For very soiled boxes, use a paste made of oxygen bleach and water to scrub down the box and rinse. Dry the box in the sun before refilling with fresh litter for your cat.
4 Clean pet crates or carriers by taking them outside and using a garden hose to wash them down. Spray the inside and outside with equal parts vinegar and water or an enzymatic pet cleaner. Allow the cleaner to sit for 10 to 15 minutes and wipe down the inside with a washcloth. Either rinse thoroughly with a garden hose or you can wash and rinse in a bathtub. Wash fabric carriers in the same manner or put them in the washing machine with laundry detergent. Dry crates or carriers outside in the sun.
5 Wash plastic, metal or ceramic pet food containers after using up dry cat or dog food. Empty pet food crumbs, and then fill with hot water mixed with 2 to 3 tsp. of oxygen bleach and 1 tsp. dish soap. Let the solution sit in the container for 10 to 15 minutes, then use a scrub brush to scrub away any food residue. Rinse thoroughly in the sink or bath tub, depending on the size of the container. Allow the container to air-dry, and then refill with fresh dry pet food. This solution will disinfect containers from bacteria buildup.
6 Soak pet toys in a solution of 1 tsp. dish soap or 2 to 3 tsp. oxygen bleach and 2 cups warm water. Allow the toys to soak for 10 minutes, scrub away any debris and rinse in hot water. Air-dry. The oxygen bleach or dish soap will not leave any harmful residue on the toys.

Many pets are considered part of the family in the eyes of their owners, and this has been one of the main reasons why the pet industry has vastly expanded in the last decade. The American Pet Products Association has tracked a growth in pet-related expenditures from $23 billion in 1998 to more than $43 billion in 2008. However, if you have great ideas for pet supplies that you can make, you can usually increase your profit margin more than you can by buying product.
3 Complete the forms to register your business. The different levels of government require you to register your business with them. For your state you'll need to register your business with the department of revenue because you will be collecting sales tax on the products that you sell. Most local governments also charge sales tax, so you will need to register with them as well as with the IRS at the federal level.
4 Find a facility. For a pet supply store you need to lease or purchase a commercial or retail space. Ideally you want a location that is convenient and easy to get to for customers. In addition you'll need to decide in advance how much space you need and find a building or unit that is big enough and affordable.
5 Determine your markup. It is important that you figure out how much it will cost to run your business in order to determine what your markup on pet supplies will be.
