Having a pet turtle can be rewarding and fun, but they also require specialized care. Make sure you are prepared before you get your turtle, so he will be happy and safe in the environment you provide. There are many different types of turtles, and the type you choose will determine the specific habitat it needs.

Tank

Turtles need adequate space to swim, but also an area to bask on dry land. The tank needs to be big enough to supply an area for each activity.

Water

The water in the tank should be deep and large enough for the turtle to be able to swim freely, without obstructions.

Land Area

The land area can be made from cork, acrylic, or even a large rock. It needs to be large enough that the turtle can get completely out of the water, yet sloped so he can climb up on the land.

Shelter

The turtle will need shelter, such as an upturned bowl, so he can hide if he feels threatened, or just wants some time alone.

Light

The turtle will need a light to supply both light and warmth. The basking area needs to be warmer than the water by a few degrees for the turtle to be healthy.

Food

To feed your omnivorous turtle, you will need fresh vegetables, fruit, or even insects such as crickets or mealworms.
